Florence

David standing starkly against the sky

The Duomo at Florence as viewed from Piazzale Michelangelo

Reverend city; sober, unperplexed,
Turning your page to genius annexed
I breathe the mint and myrrh of Tuscan hills,
The tart aroma of some classic text.

Cecil Day Lewis ~ Florence:Works of Art

I know noble accents
And lucid, inescapable rhythms;
But I know, too,
That the blackbird is involved
In what I know.

Wallace Stevens - Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird

Yet still the Arno navigably flows
And saunters past the Ponte Vecchio's
Jewel shops cast a shadow here is still
A taste for life, a market for the rose.

Cecil Day Lewis ~ Florence: Works of Art

E un mare fermo, rosso,
un mare cotto, in un' increspatura
di tegole. e un mare di pensieri.

~ Carlo Betocchi ~
It is a red motionless sea,
a rippling sea of baked tiles.
It is a sea of thoughts.

~ I.L. Salomon (translator) ~

In the room the women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo.

T.S. Eliot - The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufock

David by Michelangelo
Photographs are not permitted to be taken inside the Galleria degli Uffizi so I had some of the choir members surround me while I snapped some shots of David. Eventually the museum guards caught me and told me to put away my camera. I was bad.
